Walmore Common
Case Study
Katherine Colby Hydrologists Limited was commissioned by the Farming and Wildlife Advisory Group (FWAG) to undertake a feasibility study and later detailed design for restoring water levels on Walmore Common Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI), specifically the North Common.
Walmore Common is located in Westbury-on-Severn in Gloucestershire. Water levels across Walmore Common are managed through a drainage network managed by the Lower Severn Internal Drainage Board (LSIDB).
The feasibility study considered whether it was feasible to increase water levels within the North Common land, without losing the functionality of a key ditch system that provides flood risk benefits to Walmore Common as a whole.
Other considerations were maintaining common access across the SSSI, and the grazing rights of the right holders.
Options were explored in consultation with FWAG, Natural England (NE), LSIDB,
the residents and Trustees of Walmore Common and Walmore Common Management
Group.
